How to read this blog!

These discussions between Alan and Jace need to be read sequentially. You just think they don't make much sense, try reading them out of order! We have named each blog in the following manner:
#1 -Title of Blog
#2- Title of Blog

Etcetera. Once a topic is started by Alan or Jace they will keep that topic as the "Title of Blog" followed by a Post #. The Post # will dictate where, sequentially, a given post belongs in the timeline. For now, it's not an issue. Simply scroll to the bottom and read upwards. Still, we are initiating this library system in the hopes it will one day be necessary!

Enjoy....

#1 Belling the Cat

What is "belling the cat"? It's an allusion to the fable of the same name. Commonly known as one of "Aesop's Fables", it tells of a group of mice having a sort of town hall meeting to discuss their mutual problem; Mr. Cat. One upstart of a young rodent suggests, to much applause, simply tying a bell around the cat's neck. This way, it will be readily apparent when danger approaches. The celebratory mood is muted when an elder mouse queries, "And who will tie the bell around the cat's neck?". The moral of the story? It is one thing to suggest and another thing to do. How easy to propose impossible remedies.

So, why I am I calling this blog "Belling the Cat"? That's simple. As Alan and I engage in theological and philosophical debate, at no point do I expect to "win". Nor do I expect him too. I am an agnostic. Alan is a Christian. Can Alan prove the existence of God? I don't think so. Can I prove God does not exist? No, that is not possible. In other words, I'm planning on enjoying the process of this discussion more than any perceived outcome.

Therefore, the purpose of this back and forth, at least my purpose, is primarily one of entertainment. I enjoy robust debate and conversation. I'm a nerd!

Alan and I have been friends since we were 12 years old. We grew up in an evangelical Christian faith together. Alan has stayed the course and become a minister and educator in his adult life. I have taken another path. I make my living writing and performing music. ( Another thing Alan and I have in common, he is a fine musician himself and we have a lot of overlap in our CD collections).

We are NOT here to be rude, hurtful, or disrespectful. Not of one another or of anyone else. Alan has a public ministerial life and a pastoral and congregational authority over his personal and professional life. Therefore, while we will allow and enjoy readers to contribute on this page, we will moderate with extreme prejudice what is posted here. I am quite passionate about my beliefs and my disbeliefs. As is Alan. But the tone of this page will be one of respect and humility.

How will it work? We will pick a topic and debate it. Primarily we will stick to philosophical and theological themes. We're playing it by ear!

Lastly, this is my idea. If it all goes horribly wrong I will take full responsibility for the failure. Alan has agreed to participate and he will post his own idea of why we're doing this, in his own words.

Alan is one of the best friends I have ever had n my life. More brother than friend, really. We are very similar in many ways. And also, completely at odds with one another. I respect his mind, admire his education, and adore him and his family beyond measure. I hope this is as fun as it can be.

Jace
